Emilio T. González is a retired U.S. Army Colonel and former Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services who has spent his career in service to the nation and the greater Miami community. Today, he remains committed to advancing integrity in government, public safety, and opportunity for all who call Miami home.
Over a distinguished 26-year career in the United States Army, Colonel González served as a Military Intelligence officer, military attaché to U.S. embassies in Latin America, and a professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point, helping prepare the next generation of American leaders. He retired with the rank of Colonel after receiving numerous U.S. and international military honors.
Dr. González served as Director of Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council, advising President George W. Bush and senior national security leaders on foreign policy across the Americas. He later led U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services as a Senate-confirmed director, overseeing the agency responsible for administering the nation’s immigration system.
In Miami, he has held key leadership roles including CEO of Miami International Airport, Miami-Dade Aviation Department, and City Manager of the City of Miami, where he managed thousands of employees and major public services for one of America’s most dynamic cities.
A Cuban-born American who built his life in this country through service, education, and perseverance, Dr. González remains deeply devoted to his family, his community, and the values that guided his career.
Dr. González’s commitment to service has always been matched by a dedication to education and scholarship. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in International Studies from the University of South Florida, a Master’s degree in Latin American Studies from Tulane University, and a Master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies from the U.S. Naval War College. He later earned a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Miami and was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Business from Florida Memorial University in recognition of his leadership, business acumen and public service.
When he is not working, Dr. González enjoys reading at home and spending quality time with his loved ones including his loyal dog, Gunner.
